Meet your host family: Loraine in France

Welcome to Steve and Loraine’s home.

Hi we are both retired social workers from the U.K. we have lived here in the beautiful French countryside for nearly 8 years.
Our daughter lives locally with her two boys aged 2 and 14 years and we love spending time with them helping out with childcare and homework like most typical grandparents do.
We also have 6 other grown up children who live in various parts of the UK and they enjoy visiting us when they can get time so having a busy house is something we are very much used to and at times had the pleasure of 6 teenagers in the house at the same time when they were growing up!

Steve teaches geography and psychology at an English school locally some days during term time and Loraine will help out at someone’s gite on the odd occasion.
Loraine used to work as a manager in a children with disabilities team as well as in other front line children's teams and Steve managed a team of post adoption support workers and we both have extensive experience of managing and being around children who may have additional needs or/and just standard needs 🤣 nothing much fazes us and we are an active and friendly couple.

The dogs are very friendly though the cavapoochon thinks he’s a baby so likes lots of cuddles and the cat keeps the house free from any of the local mice who may wander in !.

We are happy to host families but we live in a rural area so whilst we have two cars we could not transport everyone everywhere.

If we host a child with additional needs, be aware there may be added costs associated, but it is completely dependent on what needs the child has.

Proposed activities:

Your English immersion experience :
A typical day with us

We like to start the day with coffee and some breakfast. We are quite health conscious so whilst we do have the occasional fried breakfast, it's generally something quite light. But as we are used to hosting all of our children and their partners, we are not averse to vegan and vegetarian requests for breakfasts and other meals and have gotten used to diversifying our meals to suit different tastes and diets.

Loraine bakes a great cake and Steve likes to cook lasagna and barbecues even when the weather does not permit! We walk the dogs every day as there are lots of country walks where we are around the reservoirs and on country hikes.

We like to go for coffee at our local coffee bar and will make lunch at home. We will do any shopping needed and in better weather, we take our canoe and paddle boards to the local lakes.

We go to local markets and some gourmet evenings during the summer months and we are lucky that there are many great events locally. We also join in our community events and recently attended a fabulous Italian night with great food and live music.

We have two local grandchildren we look after some days and they will join in with our activities; they are aged 2 and 14 years and very sociable. We like to visit some of the chateaux and historic places locally and a little bit further afield, but we do also like to relax. Fun days out include the canoe and paddle boards, and there are lots of local lakes we go to where children can enjoy pedal boats and swimming safely.

Food is something we enjoy, and our family will visit, and we share several meals a week with the children at our home. Steve likes to cook but welcomes teaching people his recipes and any help he can get.

We are both happy to give English lessons if that is needed, and whilst we are not qualified English teachers, we have lots of experience teaching courses to adults and Steve teaches other lessons in a school. We would expect that we only speak English to any guests unless some French is required to aid progress. Both grandsons have been raised in France, so the older one is fluent but understands he should speak English to guests to help them.

We have hosted French students in England when the children were younger and found the experience a great one for helping us all have different cultural experiences in a more relaxed environment.
